The only overarching things that you wouldn't completely understand are specific character stories (Renne), and even then, most of those (such as olivert in CS1) are told in such a way that you are given everything you need to understand for the current arc, and not all of the details you'd get from sky. Imo, the only part you can really play slightly out of order is ToCS1, you need TiS for it but almost don't need Zero and Ao (except a very tiny bit for the epilogue chapter, but it's negligible). Playing out of order is definitely possible to get the whole picture, but it'll spoil you out of many pleasant surprises that you only get by reading the story in order. TiS1 is the only part self-contained :D Even ToCS1 idea bases on what TiS builds. Zero references TiS everywhere from the very beginning to the very end. TiS does exactly this world building part all sequels settle on. Nobody goes to convince anyone, but if you don't have TiS in the pocket you won't understand what's happening in Zero/Ao completely - meaning you've read the book but got nothing out of it. You'll just miss the whole game point though. The Liberl Arc has no baring on Azure Tree.
